Undo is an
invitation to performers, musical dancers, dancing musicians,
poetic athletes, athletic poets and all those that find
they are neither an athlete, poet, dancer, musician, pilot, or actor but
something other and definitely inspired and interested in PERFORMANCE,
IMPROVISATION AND LIVE PHYSICAL ART.
Performance Practice led by
Barnaby Tree, an improvisation performance artist with over 25 years of
creative and teaching experience. Musician, poet and composer will lead you
into the arms of your best teacher - your own experience.
This is an intermediate level course and would be useful
for people with performance or movement experience. Newcomers must have some
kind of physical training or awareness, or are stubborn, open and courageous. The
core of the work is physical and movement is our way in.
Undo is an 8
week commitment to improvisation and performance. The offer is 2 meetings a
week. The first, and heart of the work, is on Fridays at Tatwerk – a continuous movement practice led by Barnaby
Tree with live music for dedicated physical explorations, voice work and
opening our perception. The focus is physical, to undo our relationship to body,
witnessing and performing.
The second meeting every week will either be a Saturday- open air practice or Monday at The Reading Room for group
sharing, discussion and inspirational texts. The 8 weeks will close with a
public Performance.
Come and meet over the autumn months for a satisfying
group process, like a warming Christmas pudding. It’s a wonderful opportunity
to ground our creativity into our busy lives. You can choose how much you do!
Doing everything is not obligatory. Learn to CHOOSE! Yeh! The heart of improvising! Take it easy or work like a mad dog on
the trail of heaven! The course will
provide a mountain of ideas and possibilities that you can use to develop your
own performance practice.
……..here are some elements to the practice……..
- IMPROVISATION TRAINING of the body and voice... become an authority of your own body. Know yourself in neutral and in action. Training is also about undoing our habits, which can only happen when we have recognized and lived our habits. Our habits are our friends and our starting points in improvisation.
- WITNESSING- We shall perform and we shall witness. Think of the witness as a performer in neutral. The act of witnessing is central to performance and we shall develop our active witnessing capabilities. Learn to be the one who sees, then perform.
- MEDITATION and RITUAL- This work supports and explores the natural process the body and mind goes through when put under the stress of having to perform. You are stepping over into another state of being.....(or behaving unusually) AND coming back to equalised state (so you can sleep at night). It’s useful to be able to stop performing. Learning this over and over again is the path to subtlety.
- DESIRE – learn to watch and gauge desire, know when to act. It’s your direct line to power and your navigation system. We can develop both thoughtfulness and instinct.
...........here are some structural aspects of the
course.......
·
CONTINUOUS MOVEMENT PRACTISE - a score developed
by Tree as a way of moving through our limitations. Accompanied with live
music, this practice is for dedicated physical explorations, voice work and
opening our perception. The focus is physical, to undo our relationship to
body, witnessing and performing.
·
HOMEWORK – yes the weekly classes are supported by exercises, ideas, poems,
inspirational material that you can complete and enjoy in the comfort of your
own space.
·
ONLINE BLOG – here from the beginning is the opportunity
to post and read each other’s responses, poems and experiences.
·
OPEN AIR – On 2 Saturday afternoons, I wish to
offer here the chance to work in a public space and explore through group
scores the possibilities offered by an open environment. We will come up
against many limitations, like the rain and the wind! These will feed us and
inspire our studio work.
·
THE READING ROOMS – 5 Monday evening sessions for
sharing, discussions, and reading/listening scores. We will have readings of inspirational
texts (perhaps the Mahabarata, Dante’s Inferno, Okri’s The Famished Road or
Bradbury’s The Body Electric). The focus here is sharing through words and
listening.
Please contact me, let me know about yourself. barnaby.tree @gmail.com
